Albany Library had a real treat this Saturday. A favorite local author and illustrator, Elisa Kleven, dropped in to read and lead a craft workshop based on her new book, Glasswings, a Butterfly Story. (ISBN: 978-0803737426)
This radiant story tells of Claire, a butterfly with transparent wings. She floats away from her family by accident and winds up in the big city–where she makes new friends and discovers a beautiful flower garden. Her glasswing relatives never stop looking for her and the story ends happily when all are reunited. It’s truly a story for travelers (and all people who learn to be themselves wherever they land.)
Elisa read the story to a spell-bound audience, assisted by a young girl who held a copy of the book up and turned pages for all to see. After the reading, we made butterflies with scraps and pieces of various art supplies, (pipe cleaners, string, foil, cloth, paper,) attached to a butterfly frame. Everyone’s butterfly was beautiful and, just like our Glasswing model, Claire, took on the colors and shapes of each person’s mind. Butterfly cookies were served, iced to perfection by Nguyet and Paul, two staff members at Albany Library. The Friends of the Library sponsored the event.
We’re planning a fall program featuring another of Elisa’s wonderful books. Be sure to come.
