Librarians are looking at how people that use the library should be referred to. In the old days, we served library patrons. In the 90s, we were encouraged to think of you as customers – kind of a business model that many librarians felt emphasized financial transactions. Clients and users have also been considered. Now, a well known library consultant suggests that people want to be referred to as members. After all, you join the library and get privileges. Some people have reacted negatively – membership sound exclusive, and library service is available to all.
