Julie,

I really enjoyed your post! At last week's Public Library Association conference, I attended a couple of workshops that really got me thinking about the role of public libraries in the economic development of the community. Here's a link to a blog post of mine based on that experience:

http://civillibrarian.blogspot.com/2008/03/libraries-do-build-communities.html

Based on some of the research I've done since I got back from the conference, it seems that this is an issue about which a majority of librarians simply aren't even aware. Now I can't wait to find out more about the ICMA/Public Libraries committee you mentioned.

As an aside, my sister-in-law lives in Albany, CA and tells me she loves her local library!

Julie: It would be interesting to take one of the titles and rewrite it with the language you suggest and then have some kids read it and see what they think.

I am also a Reference Librarian and I usually recommend "The Thirteenth Tale" by Diane Setterfield and "Let the Northern Lights Erase Your Name" by Vendela Vida. Both are very good general fiction books and I have never had anyone come back and complain about not enjoying them!
